Artist Philosophy
“What else could this become?”
— Suzanne E. Burks
Renewal Reclamation™
The Art of Transforming Fragments into Form™
I've always been fascinated by the possibilities that exist beyond what we first see.
A discarded piece of material may contain an unexpected texture. A familiar object may suggest an entirely different form. Colors that seem unrelated can create something beautiful when brought together.
Often, the creative process begins long before I pick up a brush or shape a material. It begins when I notice something and imagine what else it might be.
That way of seeing is the foundation of Renewal Reclamation™, my artistic philosophy and creative methodology.
It reflects my belief that a material, object, image, or experience is not permanently defined by its original purpose or appearance.
There may be another way to understand it. Another possibility to explore. Another story waiting to be expressed.
Value Is Not Fixed™
The value of something is not limited to what we first recognize.
This is the central principle of Renewal Reclamation™.
I learned an early version of this idea from my grandmother, who transformed overlooked pieces of fabric into beautiful quilts.
Today, I explore that same understanding through painting, sculptural work, mixed media, wearable art, and other forms of creative expression.
I may work with reclaimed plastic, handmade paper, metallic elements, or an unexpected image. Sometimes the original character of the material remains visible. Other times, it changes so completely that its beginnings are difficult to recognize.
What matters to me is the possibility of discovering a new meaning through the creative process.
Renewal Reclamation™ is not simply about recycling or giving an object another use.
It is about seeing differently.

From Recognition to Expression
The Emergence Method™
Renewal Reclamation™ is expressed through a five-stage creative cycle I call The Emergence Method™.
The stages describe how a possibility can move from an initial observation into an artistic expression.
A creative cycle, not a rigid sequence
Discover
Notice something that invites a second look. It might be a material, an image, an object, a memory, or an unexpected detail.
Reclaim
Recognize that it still holds value and deserves attention, regardless of its original purpose or condition.
Reimagine
Explore what else it might represent or become. Consider new relationships, contexts, forms, and meanings.
Transform
Bring the idea into physical or visual expression through shaping, layering, painting, constructing, assembling, or another creative process.
Evolve
Allow the work to carry its meaning beyond its initial form. It may inspire another artwork, enter a new setting, or create a connection with someone who experiences it.
These stages are not rigid steps.
I may move between them, return to an earlier idea, or discover a new direction while I'm working.
The method gives structure to the creative journey without removing its freedom.
Radical Recontextualization™
Seeing something in an entirely new way
One of the ideas within Renewal Reclamation™ is what I call Radical Recontextualization™.
It begins with a question: What happens when we change the context in which we understand something?
An everyday object can move beyond its practical purpose and become part of an expressive composition.
A familiar material may reveal new qualities when combined with color, light, texture, or another form.
An image may suggest a different story when translated into an abstract work.
I'm interested in the moment when the original identity of something is no longer the only way to understand it.
Its history still matters, but its possibilities expand.
That is where some of my most interesting artistic discoveries begin.
The Art of Discovery
Intention and experimentation
My artistic practice brings together two things I value: having a vision and being willing to change it.
My background in marketing and brand development taught me to think carefully about color, composition, balance, contrast, and presentation.
Those skills help me recognize relationships between elements and imagine how an artwork might come together.
But I've also learned that materials can introduce possibilities I couldn't have planned.
Paint moves. Textures change. Unexpected combinations create new forms.
I enjoy that exchange between intention and discovery.
An artwork can begin with a clear idea and develop into something quite different, without losing the thoughtfulness behind its creation.
Sometimes the most compelling result is the one I didn't anticipate.

Creativity Beyond the Individual Artist
Observe. Express. Connect.
My interest in creativity extends beyond my own studio practice.
I'm curious about how experiencing art affects our attention, emotions, memories, and sense of connection.
I am equally interested in what happens when people participate in the creative process themselves.
Making art gives us opportunities to experiment, exercise our judgment, make decisions, and express something personal.
When people create together, art can also offer a shared point of interest—a reason to exchange ideas, discover different perspectives, and connect across experiences.
You don't need formal artistic training to enjoy those possibilities.
Through Atelier Art & Design Studio, I want to create opportunities for people to engage with art as observers, collectors, participants, and fellow explorers of creative expression.
The experience itself matters, whether someone leaves with a finished object, a new idea, or simply the pleasure of having tried something unfamiliar.

An Invitation to See Differently
I don't believe that every artwork needs to tell viewers exactly what to think or feel.
I appreciate when people discover their own meanings in what I've created.
The colors may remind them of a place. A texture may suggest a memory. An abstract form may evoke a feeling I never intended.
That exchange is part of what makes art interesting to me.
Renewal Reclamation™ begins with the possibility I recognize in a material or idea.
But the work continues through the different ways others experience it.
I invite you to explore the art, look closely, and discover what speaks to you.
