Meet Suzanne E. Burks

Artist | Founder, Atelier Art & Design Studio

Art shaped by experience, imagination, and an eye for possibility.

I'm Suzanne E. Burks, a multidisciplinary artist drawn to texture, movement, color, and the unexpected forms that emerge when materials, imagination, and intention come together.

My artistic journey has been unconventional. I don't have formal training in fine art, but I've spent much of my professional life working in marketing and brand development, where visual expression is an important part of communicating ideas and creating meaningful connections.

Through that work, I developed an appreciation for color, composition, imagery, balance, and presentation. I learned to recognize how individual elements can work together to create something distinctive and memorable.

I've always believed I have a good eye and a vision for what something could be. Creating art has given me the opportunity to explore that instinct in a more personal and hands-on way.

Today, my practice includes abstract painting, mixed media, dimensional and sculptural work, wearable art, and creative experiences that invite others to explore their own expression.

What connects these different forms is my curiosity about materials, the creative process, and the possibilities we discover when we look beyond what is immediately visible.

The Roots of My Creative Perspective

Some of my earliest lessons about creativity came from my grandmother.

I watched her transform fabric scraps into quilts, taking pieces that might otherwise have been discarded and giving them new purpose. She understood how individual colors, patterns, and textures could come together to create something beautiful.

I didn't recognize it as an artistic philosophy then. I simply saw someone who could look at ordinary materials and imagine something more.

That experience stayed with me.

Years later, I found myself drawing on a similar way of seeing in marketing and brand development—considering how different elements relate to one another, what draws the eye, and how the whole can communicate something greater than its individual parts.

Today, that same curiosity informs my artistic practice.

I'm interested in what happens when something familiar is reconsidered, combined with something unexpected, or given a new form.

There is beauty in discovering possibilities that might otherwise go unnoticed.

An Eye for Color, Composition, and Form

My experience in marketing and brand development has influenced how I approach art.

I think about color relationships, composition, balance, contrast, scale, and presentation. I pay attention to how something draws the eye and how individual elements contribute to the overall experience.

But making art has taught me something equally important: not everything needs to be decided in advance.

Sometimes I begin with a clear direction. Other times, I start with a color, a material, a texture, or a shape that interests me.

I experiment, observe, and respond to what develops.

Working intuitively does not mean working without intention. I make deliberate choices throughout the process, even when I don't know exactly what the finished work will look like.

That relationship between vision and discovery is one of the things I enjoy most about creating.

I want a work to feel considered, but I also want to leave room for surprise.

An Artistic Practice Without a Single Medium

I don't believe my creative expression needs to be limited to one form.

Painting allows me to explore movement, emotion, and color. Mixed media introduces another dimension through layering, texture, and the physical character of materials.

Sculptural work invites me to consider form, structure, and space. Wearable art allows artistic expression to become part of how someone presents themselves to the world.

I'm particularly interested in unconventional and repurposed materials.

Reclaimed plastic, handmade paper, glass, metallic elements, and other everyday objects can offer surprising opportunities for experimentation.

In some works, I begin with the material itself and discover its possibilities through shaping, layering, combining, or transforming it.

Each piece develops its own identity.

Some works are quiet and contemplative. Others are bold, expressive, or highly dimensional.

I appreciate having the freedom to explore both.

Why Art and Creativity Matter to Me

My interest in art extends beyond the work I create.

I'm fascinated by the ways art can influence how we pay attention, how we feel, what we remember, and how we connect with one another.

The more I've explored creativity, the more interested I've become in the research examining its relationship with the brain, emotional well-being, and human connection.

Looking at art can invite us to slow down, observe, question, and experience something from a different perspective.

Making art offers another opportunity. We engage our senses, make choices, experiment with materials, and sometimes discover ways to express ideas or feelings that are difficult to put into words.

I find the possibilities especially interesting when people create together.

A shared creative experience can open conversations, encourage curiosity, and allow people with different backgrounds and experiences to connect through something they are making.

You don't have to consider yourself an artist to participate in that experience.

I believe creativity belongs to everyone, even though we may express it in very different ways.

That belief influences both my individual artistic practice and the experiences I want to create through Atelier ADS.

Art, Meaning, and Personal Connection

My work is informed by lived experience, reflection, and the changes that shape how I understand myself and the world around me.

Sometimes a painting begins with something deeply personal. Other times, its meaning becomes clearer as the work develops.

I don't believe viewers need to see exactly what I see.

A painting may represent a particular experience for me while reminding someone else of a memory, a place, a relationship, or something entirely different.

I value those interpretations.

They remind me that art doesn't stop communicating when the artist finishes creating it.

Its meaning can continue to develop through the people who encounter it and the relationships they establish with it.

That is one reason I appreciate the artist–collector relationship. When someone chooses to bring an original work into their life, the artwork enters another setting and another chapter of its story.

The Philosophy Behind My Work

Over time, my interest in materials, transformation, and the possibilities within what already exists developed into Renewal Reclamation™, my artistic philosophy and methodology.

At its center is a belief that has influenced much of my creative life:

Value Is Not Fixed™.

A material's original purpose does not necessarily define its full potential.

Sometimes, changing how we look at something allows us to recognize possibilities that weren't visible before.

Renewal Reclamation™ provides a thoughtful framework for exploring that idea through artistic expression.

It also informs my interest in participatory experiences, where people are invited to explore materials, make creative choices, and discover what their work might mean to them.

I created Atelier Art & Design Studio as a home for original art, creative exploration, and meaningful experiences.

It brings together the different aspects of my artistic practice: painting, sculptural and mixed-media work, wearable art, material experimentation, and opportunities for people to engage creatively.

Through Creative Sessions and other experiences, I want to offer welcoming spaces where people can explore their own ideas, experiment without needing formal artistic training, and enjoy the process of creating.

I am equally committed to building thoughtful relationships with people who appreciate and collect original art.

I believe those relationships are grounded in trust, curiosity, shared appreciation, and the stories that connect us to the work.

Atelier ADS is an expression of how I see the world: with curiosity about what exists, an appreciation for beauty and individuality, and an openness to what might still be possible.
